How to cancel HBO Max
If HBO Max bills you, cancel at HBOMax.com/subscription with Cancel Your Subscription. If Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Roku or a TV provider bills you, you cancel with them. Either way you keep streaming to the end of the period you paid for, and HBO Max doesn't refund the subscriptions it bills itself.
Find out who bills you
HBO Max is sold through a long list of partners: app stores, streaming devices, other streaming services, broadband and TV companies, even a food delivery membership. The cancel button lives with whoever takes the money, so look that up before anything else.
- On the web, go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in. In the app on a phone, tablet or computer, choose your profile, then Subscription. On a TV, choose the Settings icon, then Subscription.
- Read the top of the screen. It names who your subscription is billed through.

How to cancel HBO Max on HBOMax.com
- Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in if asked.
- Choose Cancel Your Subscription.
- Confirm the cancellation, and write down the expiration date it shows.
That date is the one that matters. You can keep streaming until then. The confirmation matters too, because HBO Max's help center says the subscription "automatically renews until you cancel it". A cancellation that never reached the confirmation screen hasn't happened.
Cancel when Apple or Google Play bills you
Signed up in the app on an iPhone or iPad with Apple billing? Cancel in Settings, the same place you cancel subscriptions on iPhone:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap HBO Max.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You may have to scroll to find it.
On Android with Google Play billing, open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions. Choose HBO Max and tap Cancel subscription. Cancel subscriptions on Google Play covers the same list on the web.
Cancel through Amazon, Roku or a TV provider
HBO Max's own cancel page lists the steps for each partner. Amazon Appstore subscriptions are turned off at Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, under Your Subscriptions. A Prime Video Channels subscription ends with Cancel Channel in your Prime Video Channels settings. On Roku, go to my.roku.com/subscriptions, choose Manage subscription next to HBO Max, and turn off auto-renew. With Hulu, HBO Max is an add-on you remove under Manage Add-ons on your Hulu account page.
If a TV, broadband or mobile company bills you, the cancellation goes through that company. Sign in to that company's account, or call it, and ask it to remove HBO Max from your plan.
When access ends, and refunds
After you cancel you can stream until the end of the billing period you have paid for. HBO Max's refund page says it doesn't refund subscriptions it bills itself, and it sends you to Apple, Google, Amazon or Roku for theirs. So waiting for the last day gains you nothing, and missing it costs you another month.
Coming back later
Resubscribe with the same account and HBO Max says your profiles, My List and watch history return with it. If a provider billed you, set the subscription up with the provider first, then connect that provider account to your existing HBO Max account before you start streaming.
The mistake that keeps you paying
Deleting the app. HBO Max's help center puts it in one line: "Deleting the HBO Max app does not cancel your subscription." Removing it from a TV or a console doesn't either. Cancel with whoever bills you and keep the confirmation. If you plan to come back for one season, put the expiration date somewhere you will see it, and get a reminder before the next charge if you resubscribe, so the second half of the plan doesn't slip.
