How to cancel subscriptions on Amazon

Amazon keeps its subscriptions in one place, Your Memberships and Subscriptions. Select Manage Subscription next to the one you want to end, then Cancel Subscription under Advanced Controls. Subscribe & Save deliveries are separate, under Your Subscribe & Save Items, and Prime has its own steps.

The one list to open first

Amazon calls it Your Memberships and Subscriptions. It shows "A list of your active, canceled, and expired subscriptions", each with its renewal date and price, and Prime and Prime Video are on it too. Your card statement only names Amazon. This list names the subscription, so open it before you hunt anywhere else.

How to cancel a membership or subscription

1. Go to Your Memberships and Subscriptions.
2. Find the subscription you want to cancel.
3. Select Manage Subscription.
4. Select Cancel Subscription under Advanced Controls.

Some digital subscriptions also have an Auto-Renew switch under Manage Subscription, which Amazon says stops the recurring charge "for your subscription or free trial before the renewal date." Prime is ended through its own help page, and the Prime guide covers it, along with Prime Video Channels.

Software subscriptions end differently

For paid software bought on Amazon, the cancel page offers two choices. End Now, under End my subscription now, stops it immediately. End on, under Cancel on renewal date, lets you use the rest of the period. Amazon warns that prorated refunds aren't available for the unused part, and that some publishers allow a full refund only within a grace period shown on the product page. Unless you're inside that grace period, End on is usually the better choice.

How to cancel Subscribe & Save

1. Go to Your Subscribe & Save Items.
2. Select the Subscriptions tab.
3. Select the product image, or Edit, to open the subscription details.
4. Select Cancel subscription.
5. Pick a reason if you want to, then select Cancel my subscription.

Timing matters here more than anywhere else on Amazon. To stop the next delivery, make the change before the Last day to update this order date on the Subscribe & Save page. "Once an order has entered the shipping process, it can no longer be canceled." In that case Amazon cancels the shipment after it and points you to a return or a shipment stop for the one already on its way.

Kindle Unlimited

Signed up through Amazon? Open Amazon's Cancel Kindle Unlimited page, sign in and select Cancel membership. "Your membership remains active until the next billing date. After the billing date passes, you lose access to content that you have checked out." Finish the book first. If you only want a month off, a monthly plan can pause for one month instead, starting at the end of the billing cycle, though not during a free trial or a promotion. A prepaid membership from a gift or a bundle gets no partial refund for unused months.

Amazon Music Unlimited

If Amazon bills you, go to Your Amazon Music Settings, open the Amazon Music Unlimited section and select Cancel in the Subscription Renewal details, then confirm. Amazon also takes the request by voice on an Echo or another Alexa device. You can use the service until the plan ends. After that the app greys out Music Unlimited songs and podcasts in your library and removes playback. Some monthly plans can pause instead, but not annual plans, free trials, promotions, or plans from an app store or a mobile provider.

When an app store or your carrier bills you

Amazon's Music Unlimited page puts it plainly: "If you signed up through Apple App Store, Google Play, or a mobile service provider, contact them to cancel or request a refund. Their cancellation and refund policies apply." For those plans, cancel in iPhone Settings, in Google Play, or with the carrier.

The mistake that keeps you paying

Leaving Subscribe & Save until the last minute. Once an order has entered shipping it can't be cancelled, so a cancellation made after the last update date still leaves one delivery on the way. Check the date on each item, cancel a few days ahead of it, and go through a few months of statements for any Amazon charge you can't match to this list.
